The possibility of a new fatal infection with even greater potential for devastation than the Chinese coronavirus developing in the future cannot be ruled out, the president of the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) said on Tuesday.
"The risk of a new public health catastrophe must be addressed," according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who spoke at the World Health Assembly event in Geneva, Switzerland. "It should not be "kicked down the road."
In addition, he asserted that even though the pandemic's worst days were behind, a variety capable of bringing the world to a standstill could still emerge. Tedros declared:
"THE THREAT OF ANOTHER VARIANT EMERGING THAT CAUSES NEW SURGES OF DISEASE AND DEATH REMAINS. AND THE THREAT OF ANOTHER PATHOGEN EMERGING WITH EVEN DEADLIER POTENTIAL REMAINS."
